Call Me Lazy

I've included a tab above to link to my Goodreads.com books. I almost always leave reviews of the books I've read there, as well as Amazon and other book sites. Since I've been remiss in updating my page here (and because of some of the craziness between authors and reviewers lately), I'm not going to update my reviews on this page.

I'm still happy to review books upon request and as time permits.

Heroes are my Weakness - Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Heroes are My Weakness
by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

5+ stars

Annie is returning to Peregrine Island, a vacation spot off the Maine coastline, to inhabit the house her mother left to her for the 60 required days it takes to maintain possession. And because she has nowhere else to go. After nursing her mother's last days, she's spent every last dime and is living on credit card debt. But its the middle of winter. Off season for the New England island.

Theo Harp is the "lord of the manor", a trust fund baby with a dark past, one that includes dark deeds aimed at Annie. Struggling with his troubled past, he has authored an equally troubling novel that opens his demons for the world to see. Or gives him a place to set them free.

This book was brilliant! The dedication is to Mary Stewart, Anya Seton, Charlotte Bronte, Daphne DuMaurier, Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney and serves as an homage to each of these classic authors. In true gothic style, we have a broken, brooding hero, an orphaned heroine with nowhere else to go. Its as if the ladies in the dedication scripted this book along with SEP, with the addition of Ms. Phillips's own brand of heroine--strong, snarky, independent.

I have not read all of SEP's backlist, but I'd venture to say this is her best work to date. I've enjoyed her other novels, with quirky, loveable heroines, but this one is the top of the heap for me. This is a book I will read again and again.
